Financial education for everyone

Most young people do not receive meaningful financial education in the UK, and recent research shows that 23 million adults in the UK have poor financial literacy.

Together, we can give more people the skills to change their lives.

The issue

The complexity of the financial landscape leaves people vulnerable to financial exploitation. For millions in the UK, that can mean debt, stress and poverty – where financial freedom seems out of reach.

Our work

FT FLIC is convinced that universal financial education is needed to overcome these challenges. We offer a full, downloadable curriculum for secondary school students and we’re developing free foundational financial education resources for adults to help them manage their money.

Our impact

We know financial education works: young people receiving our lessons year-on-year consistently demonstrate higher financial confidence and skills. Democratising financial education means equipping everyone with the knowledge that provides choices, options and a fair chance to escape poverty for good.

Helping women out of problem debt

An FT-FT FLIC celebration of International Women’s Day, chaired by Claer Barrett, the FT’s consumer editor. The expert panel explores the key drivers of women’s debt, the impact on their long-term financial security and the steps individuals and institutions can take to break the cycle.

Women are more likely than men to find themselves in problem debt – and the cost of living crisis has only made things worse. From energy bills and council tax arrears to childcare costs and credit card debt, many are struggling to stay afloat. And for some, financial hardship is worsened by coercive control, with domestic abuse-related debt leaving survivors feeling trapped.

Meanwhile, a rising number of young women are unknowingly being drawn into financial crime through money-muling. If you’re worrying about a debt issue, the webinar covers all the different debt solutions that debt counsellors can help you access, and what might be suitable for borrowers in different circumstances. What can be done to help you tackle debt and regain control of their finances? What are the most common pitfalls, and how can they be avoided? And what role should policymakers and financial institutions play in addressing the gendered nature of debt?

Debt Awareness Week

FT FLIC is currently developing a new suite of engaging and accessible learning resources to support the financial wellbeing of healthcare workers, carers, service personnel and those in precarious employment across the UK.

At the heart of the campaign was a dynamic series of social media collaborations with a diverse range of content creators. By working across multiple platforms – including Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube – we aim to cut through the noise and deliver accurate, accessible financial information to audiences at the many intersections of our target groups.

To complement this content, we also developed a free, downloadable debt management resource in partnership with Citizens Advice, National Debtline and Business Debtline, Mental Health UK, and StepChange. This practical guide offers clear, supportive steps for anyone navigating debt and is still available to download.

Catch up on the full range of videos from the campaign on the FT FLIC YouTube channel, and follow us on Instagram and TikTok for ongoing financial wellbeing and guidance content and updates.

FT FLIC curriculum wins The Money Awareness & Inclusion Awards

We are very proud to have been awarded the Money Awareness and Inclusion Award (MAIA) for Best School-age Financial Education Project in May 2024. The project we entered was our all-school financial literacy curriculum at City of London Academy Trust, Shoreditch Park.

The award win is a testament to our collaborative approach in working closely with teachers and financial experts to produce the curriculum. Our partners and supporters enable us to continue to deliver our work and break down the barriers to financial education for those who need it most.

‘Designing content for all high school year levels is impressive. The high score is for utilising well-known influencers to deliver some key messages. The messenger matters.’

‘A great project with exciting opportunities to scale and grow’

‘It’s a fantastic idea, well executed. The key aspect lies in their approach to supporting teachers, as they diligently provide comprehensive teaching materials.’
